Caltrain has finalised an agreement to transfer its retired diesel fleet to the Municipality of Lima, Peru, following the successful electrification of its network.
The fleet includes 90 gallery cars and 19 diesel locomotives, originally built between 1985 and 1987. This transfer marks a second life for the equipment, which served millions of passengers in the San Francisco Bay Area for nearly four decades. The transaction will reimburse Caltrain over 6 million USD.
The transferred fleet will contribute to environmental and mobility improvements in Lima, offering a sustainable alternative to road transport.
“This agreement will help Peru embrace a more sustainable future while also bringing millions of dollars to help us keep Caltrain running. Our former Caltrain passenger cars and locomotives will enable the start of new commuter rail service in greater Lima, cleaner air for commuters and community members and the access to opportunity that great public transportation provides. ¡Todos a bordo!”
Caltrain retired the diesel fleet as part of its transition to an electrified system along the 160-year-old San Francisco–San Jose corridor. Launched in September 2024, the new electrified service operates with zero-emission, renewable energy-powered trains, offering faster, quieter, and more frequent service.
Notably, this initiative not only preserves the utility of retired transit assets but also sets an example of international collaboration in promoting sustainable transportation.
