Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram has unveiled a New Year fare initiative offering unlimited Merseyrail travel for just 2 GBP per day on weekends throughout January.
The scheme begins on Saturday, 4 January, and ends on Sunday, 26 January, with tickets for children aged 5-15 available at a reduced price of 1 GBP.
This initiative applies to all Merseyrail lines, enabling passengers to explore the region at a fraction of the usual cost.
The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority is funding the discounted fares using money recovered from train manufacturer, Stadler.
“Making public transport more affordable and accessible is a key part of my mission to build a transport network for everyone. This £2 unlimited travel offer will help start off 2025 in the best way by helping people get around the Liverpool City Region without worrying about cost.”
The Mayor emphasised the wider benefits of investing in transport infrastructure and services, stating that the initiative aligns with efforts to enhance the region’s quality of life, whether for commuting, family visits, or leisure.
The offer complements other measures by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority aimed at reducing travel costs. These include:
- Capping bus fares at £2
- Freezing ticket prices on Merseyrail
- Introducing unlimited daily bus travel for young people for £2.20
- Maintaining the UK’s most generous concessionary travel scheme, allowing local residents access to travel passes seven years earlier than the national scheme
The reduced fares also come as part of broader efforts to improve Merseyrail services and the introduction of a new fleet of publicly owned trains.
“Investing in new trains and infrastructure is about making life better for people—whether that’s getting to work, visiting family, or just enjoying a day out. We’ve capped bus fares at £2, protected the country’s most generous concessionary travel scheme, and delivered the UK’s first publicly-owned train fleet in a generation.
“I hope as many people as possible will take full advantage and use it to see the best our city region has to offer – from the coastline of Formby and New Brighton, to wonderful museums and cultural attractions in Liverpool city centre!”
