The Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) has announced it has updated standards on its train driver selection assessments.

The board, which released a list of its newly updated criteria on 07 December 2024, has made a significant update to its RIS-3751-TOM standard, which concerns the psychometric assessments used to identify potential drivers.

Following feedback that the previous incarnation of its criteria was ‘inconsistent and out of step’, the update aims to streamline the assessment process, reducing the time required to undertake key elements of the tests themselves.

Tom Lee, RSSB’s Director of Standards, said:

“Train drivers make a vital contribution to ensuring that our railway continues to be safe. Having robust arrangements for the selection of drivers is important.

“These changes make the process clearer and more efficient, maintaining safety and reducing cost.”

Updates also include an increase in the number of attempts each candidate can make, which the board hopes will clarify the validity of the tests, thereby enhancing the recruitment process as a whole, as well as well as provide a bigger incentive to those interested in the role.
