Canada: Progress Continues on Ottawa’s O-Train Extension Project

OC Transpo has provided an update on Ottawa’s O-Train Extension Project, with several milestones met throughout 2024 and weekday service now commencing on Lines 2 and 4 of the South Extension.

From advancing construction to system testing and preparing for service, 2024 saw numerous achievements that brought the city closer to a more connected transit network.

South Extension

The South Extension achieved a major milestone in 2024 with the completion of its primary construction phase. This allowed the project to transition into the Trial Running phase, where the system underwent comprehensive testing. During a 14-day passenger service simulation, TransitNEXT achieved a rolling average reliability score of 99.5%.

The second phase of Trial Running included tests simulating real-world scenarios, such as door malfunctions, train stoppages, single-platform operations, and other service challenges. Following the successful completion of these trials and the receipt of the substantial completion certificate, Lines 2 and 4 began weekday service on 6 January 2025.

Infrastructure improvements also enhanced connectivity and safety in the South Extension. Notable developments include:

• Gladstone Avenue Crosswalk: Improved pedestrian access to Corso Italia Station and nearby multi-use pathways.
• Rideau River Pedestrian Bridge: Enhanced connectivity between Carleton University and Vincent Massey Park.

East Extension

The East Extension also made significant strides towards completion in 2024, with construction advancing on both structures and the guideway.

The track and Overhead Catenary System (OCS), which powers the trains, were completed, enabling the start of vehicle testing between Blair and Trim stations. Residents observed increased train activity as testing intensified throughout the year.
