Hitachi Rail has been contracted to upgrade telecommunications and passenger information systems on the Cascais Line in Lisbon, Portugal.

The work is being carried out for Infraestruturas de Portugal as part of ongoing modernisation efforts.

Hitachi Rail, working with SISINT and Conecticabo, will implement an automated Passenger Information System (SIP), providing real-time updates on train operations. This will extend SIP coverage to all stations on the line, improving information accessibility for passengers. The system will also support multimedia formats, allowing for future enhancements in passenger communication.

In addition to passenger information systems, Hitachi Rail will upgrade the line’s telematics systems. The project, initiated in the final quarter of 2024, includes updates to the data network, time information, energy management, and SCADA systems.

Joaquim Santos, Vice President of the ICS Business Line at Hitachi Rail, said:

Hitachi Rail’s involvement in modernising the telecommunications and passenger information systems on the Cascais Line demonstrates our commitment to delivering state-of-the-art digital solutions that enhance both operational efficiency and the passenger experience.

The contracts follow an earlier agreement for Hitachi Rail to upgrade the Cascais Line’s signalling system with electronic ETCS Level 2 interlocking technology. This aligns with wider efforts to improve service quality, safety, and functionality on the line.
