Work Underway on Melbourne Airport Rail Project

The first stage of the Melbourne Airport Rail project is set to commence, bringing major changes to the rail network around Sunshine Station. These upgrades will facilitate the future rail link to the airport and the electrification of the Melton line.

Spanning more than six kilometres from West Footscray to Albion, the project will include two new dedicated regional platforms and an extended concourse at Sunshine Station. Additional infrastructure enhancements include three new rail bridges, new and upgraded tracks, advanced signalling technology, and realignment of both passenger and freight lines.

This initial stage is a crucial step in connecting Melbourne Airport to Victoria’s regional and metropolitan rail networks. The upgrades will also support more frequent train services for the growing communities of Melton and Wyndham Vale.

Once complete, the improvements at Sunshine Station will enable it to handle over 40 train services per hour, increasing capacity for both airport and regional services. The works undertaken will also reduce future disruptions when the Melton line is electrified.

As part of the broader investment in the western rail corridor, the Victorian Government will also deliver a new, modern Albion Station. The upgraded station will feature an accessible concourse with lifts and stairs, improving connectivity and convenience for passengers.

Design and planning are well underway, with construction expected to commence in early 2026 and completion scheduled for 2030.
