Stadler and WESTbahn have signed a contract for the delivery of three SMILE high-speed trains, with operations scheduled to begin in March 2026.

The trains will be used on the Vienna – Graz – Klagenfurt – Villach route and will be manufactured at Stadler’s facility in Bussnang, Switzerland.

The SMILE high-speed train represents Stadler’s first entry into the Austrian high-speed rail sector. With a maximum speed of 250 km/h, the trains are expected to contribute to the expansion of WESTbahn’s network. This development aligns with efforts to improve rail connectivity in Austria and offer an alternative to other modes of transport.

The new SMILE trains incorporate several features aimed at improving the passenger experience, including:

  • Low-floor, barrier-free access
  • Spacious and open interior design
  • Air-conditioned, pressure-resistant passenger compartments and driver’s cab
  • Accessible toilets in every carriage
  • Step-free entry
  • Dedicated bicycle storage areas
  • Ergonomically designed adjustable seating across all classes
  • Free WiFi connectivity
  • USB ports and power sockets at every seat

These features are intended to enhance accessibility and comfort for a diverse range of passengers, including those with reduced mobility.

The acquisition of these 11-car high-speed trains is part of WESTbahn’s broader fleet modernisation strategy. The units will complement the existing KISS double-decker service.

With a design suitable for cross-border operations, the SMILE trains will be equipped to operate on multiple European rail networks.

Christian Diewald, Managing Director of Stadler Austria, said:

We are delighted to have an innovative and forward-looking partner in WESTbahn, and together, be able to deploy state-of-the-art high-speed trains within a very short space of time. The SMILE trains feature the most innovative technologies, high energy efficiency and maximum passenger comfort.

Stadler and WESTbahn have announced that the commissioning process for the new trains will be completed within two years, which is a shorter timeframe than the standard four to five years typically required for such projects.

Key specifications of the SMILE trains include:

  • Length: 202 metres
  • Number of carriages: 11
  • Maximum speed: 250 km/h
  • Acceleration: 0.77 m/s²
  • Track gauge: 1,435 mm
  • Drive system: Electric, multi-system (15 kV AC, 25 kV AC, 3 kV DC)
  • Low-floor access: Compatible with platform heights of 55 cm and 76 cm
  • Suspension: Air-sprung drive and bogies
  • Traction: Redundant drive system with four traction converters and four motorised bogies
  • Certification: TSI authorisation for operation in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, and Austria

The introduction of Stadler’s SMILE high-speed trains will mark a significant step in the enhancement of Austria’s rail services. The new trains will provide faster and more comfortable travel options while supporting WESTbahn’s growth strategy and sustainable transport initiatives. Their deployment on key routes is expected to contribute to increased passenger capacity and improved service reliability in the Austrian and cross-border rail networks.
