The order includes 24 three-car metro trains that will enhance passenger comfort and capacity on Lisbon’s metro system.
This latest contract marks Stadler’s second project with Metropolitano de Lisboa, following a 2021 order for rolling stock for the Circular Line. The 14 vehicles from the first order are currently under production, with the first unit now undergoing testing on Lisbon’s metro network.
“The acquisition of these new trains represents a major step forward in the modernisation of the Lisbon Metro. The trains will increase service quality and capacity, while improving the travel experience and mobility in the greater Lisbon area.”
The newly ordered trains will be 49.6-metre long. They will offer 90 longitudinal seats and dedicated space for two wheelchair users, with a total passenger capacity of 450.
The passenger compartments will feature large windows for a bright, open feel and maximised comfort. The design also includes an advanced passenger information system with large monitors and a video surveillance system, ensuring both safety and convenience.
Fully barrier-free, the vehicles will have nine double doors per side and spacious vestibules, allowing for smooth and efficient boarding and alighting.
“We are very proud that Metropolitano de Lisboa has once again commissioned Stadler to renew and modernise its fleet. The new subways are quieter, wider, brighter, and more comfortable. We are delighted to be able to contribute our technology and expertise to this important mobility project. The new trains will improve service and the quality of the offer, significantly enhancing the travel experience and representing a key step forward for the Lisbon Metro.”
