CRRC Ziyang has delivered a batch of SDD1 diesel locomotives to Mozambique, marking the first time that Chinese-manufactured diesel locomotives will be used in the country’s railway system.
Shipped on 10 March, the SDD1 locomotives have been developed with features tailored to meet the operational demands of African rail networks.
CRRC Ziyang has introduced several technical adaptations, including a lightweight structural design, an efficient cooling system, a modular air intake unit, and a newly developed corrugated louver to improve airflow and durability.
The locomotives are also equipped with an intelligent control system capable of real-time monitoring, enabling operators to track performance and manage operations more accurately. The manufacturer states that this feature is designed to improve both the safety and reliability of the locomotives under varied environmental conditions.
These SDD1 units are intended for use in both passenger and freight shunting roles, and are expected to play a key part in enhancing Mozambique’s railway capacity and operational flexibility.
The delivery is part of CRRC Ziyang’s wider engagement with international rail markets and represents a new phase in cooperation between China and Mozambique in the rail sector.
