Alstom has delivered the first fully automated Metropolis trainset for the new Wanda-Zhonghe-Shulin Line in Taipei.
This 22.8-kilometre medium-capacity metro line will significantly improve connectivity between Taipei and New Taipei City.
It will serve densely populated areas in New Taipei, such as Zhonghe, Shulin, Tucheng, and Xinzhuang, providing residents with an efficient, direct link to Taipei.
The project is being delivered through Alstom’s partnership with engineering firm, CTCI. The Alstom-led consortium was contracted by the Systemwide E&M Project Office, Department of Rapid Transit Systems of Taipei City Government (SEMPO).
Phase One, signed in 2018, is 9.5 km long with 9 stations while Phase Two, signed in 2020, covers an additional 13.3 km with 13 more stations.
The project integrates Alstom’s Metropolis trains with its Urbalis Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) driverless signalling system, a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, and platform screen doors. CTCI contributes by providing track work, power supply, telecommunications, and ticketing systems.
The Metropolis trainsets, manufactured at Alstom’s Taubaté facility in Brazil, are tailored for Taiwan’s operational needs. Alstom and CTCI are collaborating closely on project management and systems integration, ensuring compatibility with the Taipei metro network.
The first train handover was marked by a ceremony at the Jin-Cheng Depot, attended by Taipei City Mayor Chiang Wan-an, New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih, representatives from the Bureau Français de Taipei, Alstom, and CTCI.
“We are delighted to deliver the first fully automated Metropolis train for the Wanda Zhonghe Shulin Line. This milestone reflects our ongoing commitment to enhancing Taiwan's urban mobility. Our state-of-the-art trains will significantly improve connectivity between Taipei and New Taipei City, providing passengers a more efficient and seamless travel experience.”
Notably, the Wanda-Zhonghe-Shulin Line will interconnect with four other metro lines, further enhancing Taipei’s transport network.
